Introduction to (hopefully) a future attorney

Just a little about me, I'm a Political Science and Letters: Constitutional Studies senior at OU. I am also a part of the Accelerated MPA program in the Political Science department, so I will graduate in May 2018 (taking 5 years) with my Bachelor's and Master's degrees.

After I graduate, my plan is to go to law school. My dream school is Boston University in Massachusetts. I'm a huge U.S. history buff, so somewhere like Boston that's enveloped in history would be perfect. The school itself also has incredible programs that I'm looking for and is a well-ranked school, so win-win.

Besides going to classes and studying for the LSAT, I don't do much. I enjoy Netflix, of course. My favorite TV show that I have been making my way through for the 9th time this summer is the West Wing. It's a fictional show about the inner workings of the White House and the executive staff that works out of the West Wing of the White House. It's one of the greatest shows that has ever been on the air, and I can't recommend it enough. It features young Rob Lowe and Allison Janney, what could be better?

In addition to my Netflix habit, I have gotten really into reading historical novels. I just read two out of a series of three over the summer and now I'm really hooked on the genre. The two I read were books that constructed a narrative from many different characters' viewpoints. The first book took us through the lead-up and the duration of WWI. The second one did the same through WWII. These books were called Fall of Giants and Winter of the World, respectively.

When it comes to music, I'm kind of all of over the place. Some of my favorite artists are Bear's Den, Frank Ocean, One Direction, Drake, Sara Barielles, etc. To go along with the pseudo-theme of this post, however, one of my favorite things to listen to right now is the Broadway musical Hamilton soundtrack. I mean, it combines all of my favorite things: American history and musicals. I've also been listening to the Chernow biography on audiobook that inspired the musical. All of it is amazing. Alexander Hamilton is certainly (well, maybe not now thanks to Lin-Manuel Miranda) a forgotten yet influential figure in our nation's history. My dream, which is quite literally impossible now, was to see Hamilton on Broadway with the original cast. Alas, many of their contracts were up this summer and are now undoubtedly off to bigger and brighter things.

  1. Boston sounds like it would be an amazing place to head to next. I’ve always wanted to visit the Northeast, just because it’s all so grounded in history, like you said. It sounds like that would be a great next move for you. Good luck with the LSAT!

Also, West Wing is one of those shows I’ve heard of quite a bit but have never known much about; I loved Dule Hill in the detective-comedy show Psych, so I’ve thought about looking into West Wing, but haven’t gotten around to it yet. If you love it enough to be on your ninth watch, though, it definitely must be as good as people say. I’ll definitely have to check it out.

  2. When I first started reading your post I was going to say if you haven't listened to Hamilton you need to. But you finished with saying you have! Anytime I get into my car that soundtrack plays. So I'm guessing you're a freshmen at OU? Since you have 5 years left. You're going to have so much fun the next 5 years here! Have you ever been to Boston? I got to visit when I was in high school and tour the university. It's beautiful and like you said filled with lots of history! I haven't heard of those books but I have defiantly put them on my read list after reading this post.

  3. Living in Boston would be amazing, Kimberley! My aunt lives in Connecticut, and she has taken me to Boston a few times: such an adventure! And how nice to meet a Ken Follett fan: he is one of my favorite writers. And have you seen the film series they made for Pillars of the Earth? I thought it was excellent (although of course there was so much detail in the book they had to leave out); here's some more information about it: The Pillars of the Earth ... just looking at that page makes me want to watch the show again!

Maybe you would like to do a history-inspired project for this class of some kind: there are so many historical topics that are on the boundary between history and legend, and Snopes.com even has a History section which is pretty wild: Snopes.com: History ... I like the way they show the number of shares so you can tell what kinds of legends really capture people's interest - fun stuff! And legal urban legends could be a fun topic too: Snopes.com: Legal Affairs ... you can learn something about how people imagine the legal system by the wild stories they like to tell about it! :-)

  4. Hey! We were in the death and dying colloquium together last year, I think! I was excited to see you on the roster for this class. It's so cool that you're so passionate about history and becoming a lawyer. I wish I knew what I wanted to do that much. My best friend just moved to Boston, and she loves it there. I've gone to visit her several times, and I agree that it's a great city, but it's way too cold for me. I've never watched West Wing, but I've always meant to check it out. I didn't even know Allison Janney was in it, but that's a huge selling point for me. I love her! Also, Hamilton is so good. I don't think I listened to anything but that soundtrack last spring.

  5. Good luck on going to Boston for Law school! I’ve never been to that part of the country but it’s so steeped in history! You could probably go to a different museum each day for a year and still have more to go to! Good luck on the LSAT! Even though tests like that are hard, the end goal will be so sweet!

  6. Kimberly,
It's so nice to meet you. Wow your major must be so interesting but also intense. My G-little in my sorority is also Letters and wants to go to Law school one day. Do you know what you would like to do with your law degree once you have it or where you would like to work post Law School graduation? Those books sound super intriguing. I just read "All the Light We Cannot See" which is about World War II from the perspective of a young jewish girl and a young orphan German boy recruited to join the Nazi party. You may like it! Best of luck with everything this semester!

  7. Kimberly,
Its nice to meet you and read some of your thoughts. I bet your major keeps you really busy I cant even imagine all the studying you must be doing for the LSAT. But I bet it'll pay off and I really hope you're able to get to Boston University. I'm actually a huge history person too, but ive never seen West Wing maybe ill check it out next time I finish a show. Omg my twin sister showed me Hamilton and it is so good! Were trying to go see it sometime over the winter break if we can, cause we are both dying to see it!

  8. Hi!
I think it's great you're interested in law, my sister in law went to law school in Connecticut, I visited Boston while I was there and it was really great. I also think it's great that you're doing an accelerated program, I also want to do a 5 year program but I'm not sure if it's worth it because I don't really need a Master's, I just thought it was cool that I could get it in 5 years.. Haha. Good luck with your educational goals!

  9. Hi Kimberley! I love how the tv shows, books and even musicals you're interested in go back to your educational passion. That really shows that you are invested in and excited about your future career. I really connected with your love of music, I'm all over the place too, and Netflix. I've just recently started binging on One Tree Hill because my friends recommended it, but I've heard the West Wing is amazing. It came out in the perfect time in America where everyone was really fascinated with the Presidency, so that really adds to its success.

  10. Hi Kimberley! Wait this is so awesome, political science is actually one of my minors! I started out being PR and Letters but then switched... I kept PR as my major and took on history and poli sci as my minors because I could not handle the philosophy aspect of letters! I wonder if we've had any other classes together.
I like that you included your Netflix shows in this; it made me happy. Two that I like that I think you should check out are How to Get Away with Murder (one of my favorites!) and Controversies. Controversies is a documentary series about certain historical events and (obviously) the controversies behind them. It is really interesting to hear how a lot of them came to be etc! Excited to read more of your work soon!

  11. Hey Kimberley,

First of all I'd just like to say that I really admire your ambition! I was thinking about doing an accelerated master's program here myself, but I decided to pursue other things. Boston seems like a really cool place too. I've got a friend up there now, and from whta he says I think you'd really like it. Best of luck to you in the future, I hope it all goes well for you!

  12. Hi Kimberly,
I think it is an awesome plan to go to Boston after you receive your masters. I wish I had my life planned out like you do! I am just trying to make it through this semester. Studying for your LSAT sounds like a lot of hard work and effort. I am sure you will do great! It sounds to me like you have a lot of perseverance to get to your goal and that is awesome! I wish you luck on your LSAT and with Boston!

  13. Hi Kimberley,
I think it’s great that you are doing the accelerated program and getting your Master’s will be awesome. Boston University is such a great school. I have never been to Massachusetts but I would like to visit there one day. You sound really passionate about your major, I am sure you will get in to Law school there!

  14. Kimberley,

One of my roommates is also a political science student/hopeful lawyer. Law school seems tough to get into. I have also noticed how an interest in history is prevalent among lawyers, so maybe you are destined for it.

Thanks so much for sharing. I wish you good luck with finishing this rest of this semester and getting into BU.

  15. Hi Kimberly! Like you I am in an accelerated masters degree program! I think it is a great program and I hope you are liking yours! The West Wing is such a great show!! You should check out the new show, Designated Survivor. While it doesn't have the same political background as West Wing, it still presents a lot of the same topics and issues! I hope your program is going well and I look forward to reading your stories!

  16. Hi! It is so nice to meet you. You sound like a very ambitious, hardworking person and I think you will do great things with your life. I love all your different passions. I am history buff as well, but I lean towards Eizabethian era. And by lean, I mean I made it part of my major because I cannot get enough of it. I am definitely going to need to check out some of your reading recommendations though because I can never get enough new reading material. Thank you for sharing!

  17. Kim!!! Boston is one of the coolest cities in the states I think. That place is filled to the brim with Historical sites and facts. It was one of my favorite places that I have been to, I would love to go back one day. Like you I am also a HUGE Hamilton fan. I lived in New York this past summer and every day for twice a day I would enter the Hamilton lottery in hopes of seeing the original cast.... like you my dream will now never come true. Doesn't mean I don't listen to the soundtrack on repeat like all day every day. Looking forward to reading some of your stories!!

  18. Hi Kimberly!
Wow, it would be cool to end up in Boston eventually . . . what a great city! Also, West Wing is so good. We watched it after AP tests in my calc. class in high school, so I haven’t seen much of it but what I did see is fantastic. Ahh too bad about the contracts for the Hamilton cast being up. I hope you get to see it on Broadway eventually anyway!

  19. Hi Kimberly!
I am a big history and government fan as well. I also scored well in these classes in high school and found them so interesting. I like knowing/learning about where our country has been and how we got here. I also love Rob Lowe so I will be checking out this series once I finish catching up on The Mindy Project. I have heard amazing things about Boston and have always wanted to visit. I hope that you get to move there and attend law school there! I look forward to reading your stories!

  20. Hi Kimberley!
My best friend goes to Boston University right now! She loves it, and I know you would too. She does complain that it is cold there all of the time, but I know she has made some incredible memories the last three years. If you ever have questions, let me know! I am sure she would be happy to answer them. Nice to meet you! ☺

  21. Hi Kimberly! I'm shocked I haven't commented on your Introduction before! I think it's really cool that you want to be a lawyer. Do you know what kind of law you want to practice yet? It's also impressive that you're getting your bachelors and masters in 5 years! It's gonna end up taking me like 6 years to get my bachelors (thanks to going to community college first - damn you free tuition!) Also, I've been wanting to watch the West Wing for a while now, I'll definitely check it out soon. Nice to meet you!

  22. Political science sounds like a really interesting degree and career especially considering everything that's happened in politics over the last year. If nothing else, analyzing it all and trying to make sense of it could be a really cool thing to study. I'm also pretty impressed you're on the accelerated track since I've heard that the accelerated degree is really a nightmare of extra work. My brother is doing it too but he's an engineer so I'm sure his course load is much different but I know that it's quite heavy. I'm really surprised that I have never seen your blog yet but I'm sure you've got to be the last person in this class I haven't met. It's so strange to introduce yourself to a new classmate in one of the very last weeks of school but I guess better late than never.

  23. Hi, Kimberley!

It’s awesome that you are preparing to be an attorney. My major offers an accelerated program as well, but when I got to thinking about it, I felt it was late to do it already. My sister’s family likes Hamilton a lot too. They sing it quite often. I had a chance to learn about it from my nephew. It’s sad that you can’t watch Hamilton on Broadway anymore. Good luck with everything!

  24. Hello Kimberley,
It's a pleasure to read about you! I haven't heard much about accelerated program before, but I think it is an awesome decision. I am pursuing a career in Public Relations, but I originally wanted to be an attorney as well. I can totally bond with you based on the obsession of West Wing alone. I'm on my 3rd time watching it!
Best of luck to you the remainder of the semester. We are so close!
